Eureka! [May. 2nd, 2008|10:20 am]
[Tags|]
[music |Goldfrapp]

After many months of almost zero inspiration, last night I had a sudden burst of energy and did this:

Image is about the same size as the real thing. Please excuse the awful photo, I took it in a rush.

I REALLY like it and where I can go with this sort of stuff. This piece isn't perfect but I think it shows possibilities - especially since it was a quick painting I did late at night. The wooden object was only 50c at a secondhand store. Only problem being that it's hard to find exactly what you want at secondhand stores. Am keeping my eyes out, however, because something is starting to stir.

Ahhh, joy. I am falling in love with oils.

Edit: I am realising how this relates to my work from 2006 which can be seen here: http://jngaio.livejournal.com/18548.html#cutid1

I want to expand on ideas I was working with then - ideas of exotic, fantasy, otherness, taxidermy, colonialism, tourism, sexualising the exotic etc etc!

Any thoughts you have to share would be grrrreat!

My latest piece. He was a bit of an uninspired rush job, however. Didn't take enough time to design him. Ehh.

Some drawings from 2007 [Apr. 21st, 2008|12:31 pm]
[Tags|]

I have a bad habit of not scanning and sharing a lot of the drawings I do, feeling they're too lame to bother sharing. But that was the whole point of this journal in the first place so I'm slowly gathering together drawings from last year to share here. These drawings weren't related to the art I did at Uni last year (which I also intend to post here eventually) but simply stuff I did to amuse myself.

Crappest stuff behind the cut. Beware, image heavy. )

I've been feeling really insecure about my artistic abilities for the last several months. Meh.

Also, I have a piece in an upcoming group exhibition. Come take a looksee if you can.

Yet another mermaid. [Apr. 21st, 2008|11:38 am]
[Tags|]

Just a drawing that I want to improve upon and turn into a painting. Any suggestions? Also, I'm becoming quite inspired by mermaids and deep sea creatures. Any interesting/inspiring stories, myths, thoughts etc about the ocean and the life within it that you'd like to share with me?

I apologise for being so scarce here, by the way, currently trying to get various aspects of my life sorted out.

Edit: Oh! Wait! Also, what do you guys think of this second gal? I know the drawing isn't as carefully rendered but I kind of see some interesting possibilities for the second gal in a painting that maybe the other gal doesn't have. What say you?

Oil paint fo' real. [Mar. 23rd, 2008|06:31 pm]
[Tags|]
[music |KRISTEN SCHALL IS A HORSE]

Hey you lot! Long time no update... and I'm afraid this isn't going to be an especially huge one. SORRY! SO SORRY! I just wanted to show you all an oil painting I've been working on (maybe 8 - 10 hours painting time? And AGES waiting for paint to dry! Eep!) and get some feedback. I've worked with oils a little before but never really understood the way they work, this is the first oil painting I've ever done where I've actually been learning about the medium and following its "laws".

Pardon the bad photo, it's an overcast day and tis just a snapshot to give you an idea of what the painting looks like.

It's not finished by the way. I just don't really know what else to do.

I am sooo happy with how vibrant the colours are. Constructive criticism welcome but don't make me cry - I'm new at this!

Colour...glorious colour... [Dec. 16th, 2007|12:01 am]

OH HAI GUYS.

Guess what? I have my Masters in Fine Arts! WOO! Go me! I'll eventually get all my MFA work from this year online but I'm currently too busy looking for a house to rent.

Not too busy to do a random picture on my tablet, though. I felt like making art just for the fun of it which I really haven't had much time to do in yonks.

It was refreshing. About 4 hours spent on my tablet doing this. The boobs were really hard, I wanted to make them look like they're floating but I'm not really sure if it worked? I've never had trouble with boobs before!

Um... also, in case anyone was wondering... my domain name expired. I was too busy to notice until it was too late. I'd have to pay a fee to get it up again within the next 30 days or something like that so I'm just going to wait. "jngaio" doesn't seem to be especially in demand anyway and I've no time to work on my site still anyway.

Myself and my monster for the opening night of this exhibition: http://jngaio.livejournal.com/29490.html

Will post better photos of the monster later. It was fun! I must do more fun group exhibitions in the future! It's a relief from the pressure of academic Uni stuff. It was also cool to revisit and expand on my monster making from last year (http://jngaio.livejournal.com/18548.html).

B-b-b-busy. [Oct. 29th, 2007|11:13 pm]
[Tags|]

Hey all, just an update to basically say I'm not going to be around here much for awhile. I've got a lot of art I've not yet shown you guys and my website desperately needs an update but unfortunately, I really don't have the time. Right now I have to concentrate on completing my masters degree. Then, when I finish, I have to look for a job, a house... figure out the real world for a bit.

I have plans for my website and for this place but unfortunately I'm having to be realistic right now and realise that real life is a major priority. Too much moolah has gone into this course for me to get sidetracked by other projects.

I'll be back. In the meantime, here's a little sketch from my sketchbook which was done in ballpoint pen. I've been sketching purely in ballpoint pen a bit lately, it's nice because when you make mistakes, you can't erase them, you simply have to go with them. I actually enjoy sketching in ballpoint more than pencil, because there's no smudging and all your working lines are shown. I find it relaxes me which is really important right now because I've been feeling stressed and angsty!

See y'all later!

Surreal and scary. [Oct. 11th, 2007|12:01 am]
[Tags|]

I had the most creepy, weird experience the other day.

I looked out my window and saw a big pile of bones.

Seriously, I saw the bones before I realised what they were in...

The truck made it even more disquieting somehow. But also sort of...awesome in a way that made me feel like a sick person.

Sorry the photos are not the best, I had to quickly rush to get my camera before the truck drove away. Also, as my window overlooks a main street in Melbourne, it is always filthy.

[music |Radiohead - Amnesiac]

I don't tend to post unedited photos as I'm not a terribly good photographer but I like this shot (even if maybe it's a little boring?) it was taken from my friend Wes's visit to my hometown, Rotorua, New Zealand, last year.

SEXY EXPERIENCE! [Sep. 27th, 2007|10:33 pm]
[Tags|]
[music |Moloko - Things to make and do]

Just a silly something I drew to put on my friend's fridge. It's coloured pencil on water colour paper though so unfortunately the colouring isn't too grand because the colours would not blend/take to the paper properly. EH.

I'm got a shite load of art from Uni to show y'all but no time to get it all online. My website DESPERATELY needs a total overhaul but I don't have the time nor the skills. If anyone wants to make me a new website, I'm willing to pay them in love! *Wink nudge*

Me and my bunny man. [Sep. 17th, 2007|04:35 pm]
[Tags|, ]

Thanks to [info]wedley for taking this photo (though it has been heavily edited, I tried to make it look a little gritty but it probably just looks all shitty to everyone else!) Unfortunately, it started raining before we got any photos I was really happy with. Might have to try this again on a sunnier day. SORRY WESLEY.

Oh and in case you're wondering... the horrible bunny bonnet thing that I'm wearing was a gift from a lovely friend from uni. Isn't it wonderfully awful?

Opinions please? [Sep. 12th, 2007|06:55 pm]

[music |Zero 7 - The Garden]

Hey all, long time no update. I apologise, I've been busy with Uni.

Anyway, a book is currently being compiled profiling postgraduate students from this year. We have been asked to include a couple of images of work that we feel most strongly speaks of what we've been doing this year, one of the images I want to include is a photo of a giant bunny man I made (he's over six foot tall and was rather difficult to photograph!). I can't decide which photo is better, however, I was hoping you guys could give me your opinion?

This:

Or this:

Thanks in advance!

Decisions, decisions. [Jul. 24th, 2007|09:42 am]

Just so you know, I didn't intend for this photo to have any deeper meaning. Lucas simply has these two little bottles labeled "poison" and "antidote" sitting on the top of his fridge and we thought they'd photograph well.

Let me know how the colours in this look on your screen. I wanted them to be a little odd because that'd how I like 'em... but I think my screen might be a little brighter than your average screen?

How To Paint The Mona Lisa... [Jul. 3rd, 2007|11:00 pm]
[Tags|]

...In Microsoft Paint!

No, I did not do that. I do not have that sort of patience!

I love seeing what people can do using very basic tools... I mean, in the digital world, MS Paint is almost as basic as you can get! I love that this icon for "high art" and human achievement, this masterful painting, has been taken and reproduced in such a way. It's kind of cool and kind of absurd which makes it kind of funny.

You know?

Suited Man. [Jun. 24th, 2007|02:10 am]
[Tags|, ]
[music |Billy Idol - Rebel Yell]

I discovered something today, putting a decent amount of time and patience into your art actually is worthwhile! WHOA! WHODDATHUNK?!?! I started this this afternoon and have spent almost 7 hours on it... so far. This is a work in progress and it is a freakin' MONSTER! I want to be able to print it at just over a meter tall without losing any quality so it is over 200mb big and counting. I've a lot of work to do yet, though I don't expect there to be any drastic changes, I just want to try my best to perfect this.

But tell me you're lovin' it so far, because I am!

When I finish this, I will post a larger image in this and let y'all know it's been updated.

I love my tablet and my wide screen monitor. Thanks Mum and Dad! *Happy sigh*

Edit: Larger image posted. Not finished yet but getting there.
